Ozouf meets Corbyn at Labour Party conference

The pair – who are polar opposites on the political spectrum – met at the Labour Party’s annual conference in Brighton this week.

Left-winger Mr Corbyn, who won more than 60 per cent of votes from party members and affiliates during the leadership contest, has previously said that ‘tax havens like the Channel Islands’ should be closed.

Former Treasury Minister Senator Ozouf said that Jersey needed to be represented at UK party conferences so relationships can be built with politicians and to ‘allay’ any concerns that they may have.

‘Jersey has been attending all the political conferences in the UK for a number of years,’ the minister said.

‘The UK is our major and most significant partner.

‘The significant debate that happens at party conferences is an important opportunity for us to meet all sorts of MPs and MEPs across the political spectrum.

‘The election in the UK is four years away – there is a long way to go for Labour.

‘It is important that we have got a relationship.

‘We have always enjoyed a good relationship with the Labour party in the past.

‘It is important to talk about any concerns.

‘I think we are able to allay most of the concerns.’

Despite their political differences, Senator Ozouf said that Mr Corbyn was ‘courteous’ when the pair met.

He added: ‘My job is to communicate what we do and don’t do.

‘I think we’ve put behind us many of the issues that are a concern to people in the Labour Party.

Jersey is a very high quality jurisdiction.

‘The more we grow the more of a benefit and value Jersey is to Britain.

‘Jersey is regarded as a leader in terms of what we do in the finance sector.

‘That sector is growing strongly.

‘We can benefit the UK economy as never before.’

Following Mr Corbyn’s election, a number of front bench politicians resigned due to their differences with his policies.

Senator Ozouf said: ‘It is a very interesting conference.

‘There is lots of vigorous debate about the future of exactly what the Labour party is going to be.

‘There is a lot of uncertainty about where the leadership stands.’
