THE family of an Islander who was murdered in Thailand has praised a scholarship course which has been renamed in his honour.

Yesterday, the JEP reported that the programme being offered by ore producer Consolidated Minerals had been renamed after David Miller, who had been enrolled on the programme before his death.

Jerseyman David Miller was 24 when he was killed

Mr Miller (24) was killed in September last year while on holiday in the island of Koh Tao.

His death came shortly after he had completed a period of work experience at the Australian mine site of Consolidated Minerals, which has its headquarters in Jersey.

The former Victoria College student was murdered alongside 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge from Norfolk in the Thai resort.

Now, his father, Ian Miller, on behalf of the family, has praised the scholarship and said that they were profoundly touched that it has been renamed after Mr Miller.

He said: ‘David had just completed his third year at Leeds University and Consolidated Minerals had sponsored his studies that year.

‘It is a wonderful and special scholarship and was of huge benefit to David.

‘He had been working his way through university and the scholarship made all the difference in allowing him to concentrate on his studies.

‘Consolidated Minerals looked after David very well when he was in Australia with them and after his tragic death they approached us to talk about naming the scholarship after David.’

Applications for the scholarship should be sent to recruitment@consmin.com with an accompanying CV and covering letter by Thursday 30 April.

He added: ‘We know David had a really interesting and formative time out in Australia with them.

‘It is very touching to us and wonderful that they have done this.’

Two Burmese nationals are due to stand trial later this year charged with the murders.

  • The Australian company has its headquarters in Commercial Street, Jersey Evening Post
  • It operates two manganese ore mines – in Australia and Ghana
  • It also owns a chromite mine in Australia – the only one in the country
  • Manganese is the 12th most common element found in the earth’s crust
  • The metal is used to make several alloys, most commonly stainless steel
  • Due to lowering sales of manganese, Consolidated Materials made a profit of $1 million in 2014 ($145m in 2013)[/breakout]
