Evacuees Association founder awarded British Empire Medal

Jean McLaughlin, who left Jersey on the last boat taking civilians to the UK in June 1940 ahead of the German occupation, received the medal at Government House from the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, as special guests, relatives, friends and fellow evacuees looked on.

‘It was a magical, amazing and wonderful day,’ said Mrs McLaughlin who was accompanied by her daughter Karryna Lovesey, her son John James McLaughlin, their spouses, and her grandchildren Chrystal (7) and Holli (3) Lovesey and 16-month-old Luke McLaughlin.

Chief of Staff to the Lieutenant-Governor Justin Oldridge explained to the large gathering the work that Mrs McLaughlin had done in achieving recognition for evacuees before she was presented with the medal by Sir John. He thanked her for all her efforts and said that her husband John, who died last year, would have been very proud.
