This week, as we approach International Women’s Day, I’ve been profoundly inspired by the remarkable women I’ve encountered in the most unexpected places. Their stories of resilience, strength, and unwavering determination have not only touched my heart, but have also reinforced the essence of what this day symbolises.

Katerina’s story: A modern phoenix

Take, for instance, Katerina – a 34-year-old single mother from Madeira.
With her family back in Madeira and her daughter’s father absent, Katerina stands as the sole pillar of support for her child with special needs.
Working six days a week in the beauty industry, she refuses to rely on state assistance, embodying a fierce independence.
Her deep connection to her late grandmother provides her with spiritual strength, often remarking, “I have no option but to continue to be there for my daughter.” Despite moments of exhaustion, she remains steadfast, viewing herself as a phoenix rising above challenges.

The phoenix and International Women’s Day

The symbolism of the phoenix aligns seamlessly with the spirit of International Women’s Day:
Overcoming adversity: Much like the phoenix rising from its ashes, countless women face personal and societal challenges, emerging stronger each time.
Transformation and growth: The phoenix’s rebirth signifies shedding the old and embracing a renewed self, mirroring the transformative journeys many women undertake.
Strength and resilience: Embodying an indomitable spirit, the phoenix reflects the countless women who defy limitations and rewrite their narratives.
Healing and renewal: The cycle of the phoenix symbolises healing from past traumas and embracing new beginnings, akin to many women’s stories of renewal.

A legacy of strong women

Reflecting on my lineage, I’m fortunate to come from a line of formidable women:

  • My grandmother (Nan Hicks): She owned a hairdressing salon during the war years, showcasing entrepreneurial spirit amidst adversity.
  • My aunt (Pat Dubras): Beyond her hairdressing career, she was instrumental in local theatre, co-founding the Jersey Arts Centre.
  • My mother (Margot Kelly) : Currently battling the challenges of aging and health issues, she continues to exemplify resilience.

Their stories have instilled in me a resilience that I now channel to support others.

Champions of women’s health

In recent times, I’ve had the privilege of meeting extraordinary women dedicated to advancing women’s health.
Notably, some of these trailblazers will be participating in the upcoming #BeTheChange conference on March 19 2025 at the Royal Yacht:

  • Dame Lesley Regan: A professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, Dame Lesley was appointed as the UK’s first Women’s Health Ambassador in 2022. In this role, she drives system-level changes to close the gender health gap, supporting the implementation of the Women’s Health Strategy; and
  • Helen Tomlinson: As head of talent (UK & Ireland) at The Adecco Group, Helen was appointed as the UK’s first menopause employment champion in March 2023.

Her mission is to normalise menopause discussions in the workplace and empower women to thrive in their careers during this phase of life.

Addressing the women’s health gap

The term “medical gaslighting” has become prevalent, highlighting how women’s health concerns are often dismissed.
Recent reports indicate that millions of women face challenges due to a lack of understanding in the medical community.
Organisations like Wellbeing of Women are pivotal in bridging this gap through education and advocacy. Their recent campaigns aim to empower women with knowledge, ensuring they receive the care they deserve.

Local healthcare challenges

This week, the Health Department faced a leadership change, with the chief officer stepping down due to medical reasons.
Notably, Jersey allocates 28% of its total budget to Health – the highest among 38 developed countries.
However, challenges persist, particularly in communication and co-ordination within departments. Personal experiences, such as navigating post-hospitalisation care for loved ones, highlight the need for systemic improvements. Engaging frontline workers in solution-driven discussions is crucial for meaningful change.
