After launching earlier this year, the Jersey branch of the socio-political movement held a demonstration on Wednesday when it staged a ‘die-in’ at West’s Centre.
As part of a week of workshops and talks, around 30 members of the group dressed in animal costumes and masks and lay down in town to represent how animals are being killed as a result of climate change.
Eckart Weber, a member of the Jersey group, said Wednesday’s demonstration was a big success and future events were being planned. And he added that although there was nothing in place to cause disruption and the blocking of roads, this was something that was being considered in the Island as the group continued to spread the message.
He said: ‘It all went really well. It was a great success and we had people saying there and then they were going to join us and get involved. We went from the Royal Square through town and staged the die-in, where two songs were sung.
‘We handed out leaflets. People were clapping and praising what we were doing. We are now planning on future demonstrations and discussions will take place.
‘There is a big event in London in October, so after that we will look to do something.
‘I can’t say if disruption to the Island and inconvenience to people will be part of the action, but it is something that will be considered.’
This weekend members of the Jersey branch are going around every parish hall in the Island to put up their ‘declaration of rebellion’, and a large poster will also be unveiled in the Royal Square outside the States Chamber.
