A REFORM Jersey politician is to seek a third term as a St Helier Deputy in June’s election.
Deputy Carina Alves was first elected in 2018, becoming the first person of Portuguese heritage to be elected to the States, before topping the poll in St Helier Central four years ago.
She has served as an Assistant Chief Minister since the change of government in 2024 as well as acting as an Assistant Minister in Housing and Education.
“It has been truly an honour to have represented St Helier Central for a second term,” she said. “I have worked diligently to listen to my constituents’ concerns and push through proposals, policies and legislation that seek to have a meaningful, tangle impact to our everyday lives.”
During this term of office, Deputy Alves has successfully brought proposals to extend the young person’s bus pass scheme to all full-time students and apprentices, offer free GP visits to under-18s and those in full-time education and increase protection for whistleblowers.
Deputy Alves added: “Addressing the pressures of the rises in the cost of living is paramount over the next four years. We need to help support those who are struggling with paying everyday bills, caring for their children and families, and feeling like their work is giving them a good quality of life through progressive, sustainable and clear decision making so that Jersey and our community can become a place where we thrive not just survive.
“I hope that my constituents will put their trust in me once again to continue to build and expand on the work I have started.”
Reform Jersey secured a clean sweep in St Helier Central at the 2022 election. This year, there will be four seats on offer in the district, with Deputy Alves’ party colleague Deputy Catherine Curtis also confirming she will be seeking re-election. Deputy Geoff Southern will be retiring while Education Minister Rob Ward will be turning his attention to the St Helier Constable seat.
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June.
