The Spaniard, who extended his contract this week, volleyed home from close range seven minutes from time after being picked out by a brilliant Kevin De Bruyne cross.
City had trailed at half-time to an Angelo Ogbonna header but dominated the second period and pulled level through Nicolas Otamendi.

Star man – Adrian
A couple of fine saves from @AdriSanMiguel! ????♂️
First to deny De Bruyne’s free-kick and then a curling effort from Sané.

Only selected because Joe Hart was ineligible to face his parent club, the Spaniard was betrayed by the result as he made an eloquent case for a longer stint between the posts. He thew himself around with abandon as City poured all their attacking resources into chasing the game. Leroy Sane was rebuffed twice as he looked to bend into the top corner, De Bruyne saw his free-kick pawed from danger and dealt emphatically with crosses. He might even have kept a clean sheet had teenage defender Declan Rice not been twice beaten to crosses in the six-yard box, each one yielding a City goal.

City have gone behind four times in the Premier this year, going on to take 10 points from a possible 12. West Ham joined Huddersfield and Bournemouth in losing from a winning position, with Everton taking a point at the Etihad in August.

Ogbonna had never scored a top-flight goal before he nodded West Ham into a shock lead just before half-time. The 29-year-old has a decade of first-team football behind him but had only ever scored in Serie B for Torino and in cup competitions, including twice for the Hammers in this year’s Carabao Cup.
