James Anderson gives England perfect start as India falter again

James Anderson’s 100th Test wicket at Lord’s gave England a great start in their pursuit of victory on the fourth day of the second match of the series against India.

Anderson had Murali Vijay caught behind for a duck as the tourists’ second innings began in familiar fashion, becoming the first man to take a century of Test wickets at the home of cricket.

England had earlier extended their lead to 289 after declaring on 396 for seven immediately once Sam Curran was dismissed.

Curran fell 10 short of a second successive Test fifty when he got a thick edge down to third man as he aimed a big hit at the start of a new spell from Hardik Pandya.

England’s seventh-wicket stand therefore ended on 76, with Chris Woakes, who went past 1,000 Test runs, remaining unbeaten on 137 when Joe Root called him in.

Anderson then made a perfect start for England to leave India nought for one, with Vijay bagging a pair.

That left Lokesh Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara to lead an unlikely recovery, with more rain looming.
