How men’s semi-final day unfolded at Wimbledon as Kevin Anderson won a thriller

Kevin Anderson won a gruelling, history-making semi-final that ran for over six and a half hours to earn a place in his first Wimbledon final.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at Friday’s highlights.

Post of the day

Well it did last a long time. Six hours and 36 minutes to be precise. Perhaps a slightly unfair observation about silver-haired umpire Marija Cicak from comedian Jack Whitehall, however.

Shot of the day

At 24-24 in the fifth set Kevin Anderson slipped on the baseline and dropped his racket. He got back to his feet and played a left-handed forehand which landed in before going on to win a crucial point.

Match of the day

Records tumbled as Anderson eventually overcame John Isner in the longest Wimbledon semi-final and second-longest grand slam match in history. It finished 7-6 (8/6) 6-7 (5/7) 6-7 (9/11) 6-4 26-24.

A bad day for…

Isner, who must now know how Frenchman Nicolas Mahut felt after he lost their 11-hour marathon 70-68 in the fifth at Wimbledon in 2010.

Stat of the day

Sadly for Isner, his 214th ace was his last of the championships. Still, beating Goran Ivanisevic’s tournament record with a match to spare is some going.
