COURAGEOUS sea swimmers will currently be preparing themselves for this year’s Jersey to France Challenge this weekend.
Racers will gather at the start line for 6am at Le Coupe tomorrow, where 14 teams – including one from as far as afield as Australia – with over 90 participants will enter the water and embark on the 14-mile journey to Carteret in France.
After last year’s challenge had to be cancelled midway through due to poor weather, race organiser, sponsor and swimmer Simon O’Donoghue said he was looking forward to this weekend.
“Last year the weather just did not play into our favour.
“I was very much in trepidation this year as to how we were going to be.
‘Until the forecast started clearing this week and now it’s looking fantastic, which is excellent news!”
Even though they had to call it quits on the challenge in 2023, the group still managed to raise a staggering £25,000 for Dementia Jersey and will be looking to top that figure for the same charity this time round.
“It’s going to be fun whilst raising money for dementia, an incredible cause,” O’Donoghue said.
While tomorrow’s conditions are set to be much improved, swimmers will still be getting ready to face formidable tidesand fierce competition in the water.
Happening at the same time as the Gorey Regatta and the Gorey to Carteret rowing, it is going to be one busy stretch of water.
Those taking part are asked to park at the top of Fliquet and walk down to the beach as it is set to be a busy event.
The organisers would like to thank Race Nation and their generous main sponsors, Spring Investment Management, Dickinson Gleeson and Axal Leine for their support in making the event possible.
