ST CATHERINE’S was lit up with sunshine, favourable winds and sailors of all ages competing last weekend.
Sunday’s racing was the culmination of two days of junior Optimist training and the introduction to adult sailing programme.
Juniors, aged from 6-12, learned to sail in the Optimist class, a very stable and proven design class.
They were supported by a dedicated training and safety RIB with qualified instructors on the water.
For the entire fleet, there were two further safety boats and the race officer boat on the water, with a beach master on the slipway managing launching and recovery.
This made for a very safe sailing venue, relatively protected in one of Jersey’s most picturesque sailing venues.
Sunday’s epic saw young Oli Hunt in his Pico class just edge Lottie Olson in her Optimist class boat to the win on corrected time.
Olson sailed two fantastic races to lead the Oppi fleet, while sister Izzy pulled a brilliant second race together showing that all their training had really paid off.
Charlie and Jack Higwell battled it out, with the Edwards brothers in the middle of the fleet showcasing the young talent across the group.
The sailing club at St Catherine’s welcomes anyone who is interested to have a go getting out on the water in a sailing dinghy.
A temporary membership of £40 is on offer, which grants access to book a boat or join a introduction class for adults or children over the summer.
People are encouraged to come along on Thursday evenings for midweek sailing and the majority of Saturdays and Sundays through the summer.
