JERSEY Cricket’s new representative initiative enjoyed a successful launch over the Bank Holiday weekend as the newly-formed Jersey Cricket Club shared honours with the touring MCC in an entertaining T20 double-header at Grainville.
The JCC Representative XI, introduced to provide stronger competitive opportunities for the island’s leading domestic players, fell to a seven-wicket defeat in the opening T20 before responding well with an emphatic win of their own in the second encounter at the National Cricket Centre on Sunday.

Jersey Cricket Head of Operations, Lee Meloy described the inaugural outing as a “great success” and believes the initiative can play a key role in raising standards across the local game.
“The main focus of the introduction of the JCC is to provide cricket for two ends of the spectrum,” said Meloy. “The first is higher standards of cricket for those players performing well in the domestic club game.
“That was achieved with two really good fixtures against the MCC, two very competitive matches where both sides competed really well and some names impressed.
“The other side of the initiative is the Masters XI, offering a more social environment for those in their twilight years of the local cricketing community still keen on playing a good level.”
Meloy explained that selection for the JCC Representative XI will continue to be based on performances in domestic club cricket, with the opening squad chosen from last season’s form and the early weeks of the current campaign.
In the opening game of their T20 double-header on Sunday, the representative side made an immediate impression batting first, posting a strong score of 173 for 5.

Young Farmers wicketkeeper Jack Kemp made 34 at the top of the order, but it was Walkovers’ Drew Sylvester (left) who stole the headlines with an excellent 76 from 51 deliveries, striking seven fours and three sixes.
Fellow Walkovers teammate Jacques Van Der Walt added late impetus with an unbeaten 40 from only 21 balls.
In the reply, International Royals spinner Kush Pathak gave the hosts the perfect start in the chase by clean bowling Dan Waite with the first ball of the innings.
However, MCC captain Richard Kaufman produced a masterclass under pressure, finishing unbeaten on 96 from 58 balls with 10 fours and four sixes to steer the tourists home with three balls remaining.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Kush Pathak finished as the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 26, while Old Victorians seamer Scott Simpson claimed the other wicket.
Bowling first in game two, the Jersey bowling attack hit back well to restricted the visitors to just 133 for 7.
Old Victorians all-rounder Ed Giles led the way with the new ball, claiming 3 for 25 from his four overs, while Walkovers’ Tiaan Kruger picked up 3 for 34.
In the chase, St Ouen Springfield opener Georon Claasen struck 31 before Sylvester again took centre stage, dominating proceedings with a superb unbeaten 65 from just 39 balls, including nine fours and a six, guiding the hosts to victory inside 18 overs.

Reflecting on the occasion, Meloy added: “The boys enjoyed the day, it was a good quality day of cricket with some excellent performances on display from both sides.
“Our guys had a good opportunity to both focus on their own individual skills and show what they can do, whilst also teaming up with some new teammates outside of the usual club set-up and enjoy that camaraderie.
“They were switched on from the off. It was a hot day especially with back-to-back games, but they got stuck in. Hopefully they had a good day out and they can take plenty of positives from it back to their club sides.”
Attention has already turned towards expanding the programme, with Meloy hopeful of arranging more fixtures this summer, including a potential inter-insular clash against Guernsey’s newly-formed Mavericks side.
“We’re looking to hopefully add more fixtures, particularly an inter-insular this summer,” he continued. “Guernsey Cricket have also announced a similar initiative, creating the Guernsey Mavericks, which we’re keen to play against and try and make a regular fixture.
“The squad will not necessarily be the same as we’ve seen this time. We have put in place a small selection panel who will choose each squad dependent on club cricket performances.
“We think this is a good thing to help encourage those lads keen to play well for their clubs and impress to try and earn their spot.
“Although selection for this team and subsequent good performances for them does not guarantee anything regarding national squad selection, it certainly wouldn’t hurt your cause.”

Meloy also confirmed ambitions to introduce Masters fixtures against touring teams, as well as the possibility of overseas tours in future years.
Jersey men’s head coach Neil MacRae has also backed the initiative and its potential impact on the domestic structure.
“We want to give people a reward for their continued performances and commitment to club cricket with higher standard fixtures and an opportunity to bring those standards back into the domestic game,” Meloy added.
He also praised lead sponsors Integritas Wealth Partners for their support of the new venture, highlighting their commitment to helping create a high-quality environment for players involved in both the Representative and Masters set-ups.
