JERSEY Basketball Association delivered its biggest-ever tournament this week as local sides tested themselves against opposition from Guernsey, Essex Rebels and Luxembourg across a packed programme of fixtures.
Held across Oakfield and Beaulieu, the four-day schedule provided crucial competitive opportunities for Jersey’s developing youth sides, while also showing the continued growth of basketball on the island.
With teams visiting from the UK and Europe, the tournament carried an international feel rarely seen locally, something organisers hope can become a regular feature moving forward.
Among the standout performances came from Jersey’s inter-insular sides, with the Caesareans enjoying a clean sweep over Guernsey at youth level.

Jersey’s Under-18 boys secured a convincing 71-47 victory, while the Under-16 boys and girls also claimed wins against their island rivals.
For Jersey coach Timea Kraft, the event highlighted both the progress being made locally and the importance of exposing island players to stronger opposition more regularly.
“This has been the biggest tournament we’ve ever done, junior or senior level,” she said.
“It’s great to see basketball developing and Luxembourg are already asking for next year’s dates because they enjoyed it so much.”
Kraft’s Under-16 girls side faced a difficult opening weekend against strong Essex Rebels opposition, with the English side defeating both Jersey and Guernsey comfortably.
However, Jersey responded impressively against Guernsey, earning a 41-33 inter-insular victory thanks largely to influential performances from 13-year-old Maya Kraft and Kiara Oliveira.
“We realised how much we need these week-in, week-out games,” Kraft added.
“The pool of girls on the women’s side is still quite small in Jersey, so hopefully weekends like this help grow the sport and encourage more girls to get involved.”
Several of Jersey’s younger female players are already stepping into senior basketball, with three members of the Under-16 side also preparing to feature in next month’s senior inter-insular fixtures.

Kraft believes that pathway is crucial for the long-term future of the women’s game locally.
“You can already see the difference in players who attend camps and get extra coaching opportunities,” she said.
“They’ve got the right attitude and drive and hopefully this is the start of building a stronger structure for the senior team in the coming years.”
The tournament also offered Jersey’s boys sides a valuable benchmark against stronger opposition from Essex and Luxembourg.

Jersey’s Under-21 men produced one of the performances of the week with a 62-54 victory over Luxembourg’s Under-20 side, with Jesper Jensen delivering an MVP display to help guide the Caesareans to an impressive win against strong international opposition, while the senior Jersey men edged Luxembourg 50-47 in a closely-fought encounter.
Despite some heavy defeats across the week, the overall feeling surrounding the event remained overwhelmingly positive, with strong crowds attending throughout the weekend in the island’s recent spell of hot weather.
Visiting teams also had the opportunity to experience the island away from the court, with players and coaches enjoying Jersey’s beaches and hospitality during their stay.
Most importantly for Jersey Basketball Association, the tournament provided exactly what many local coaches believe has been lacking in recent years – meaningful, competitive matches capable of accelerating player development.
The JBBA now look forward to 6 and 7 June where senior Inter-Insulars are set to take place at Oakfield.
