THE Channel Islands’ leading golfers face one of their toughest assignments of the season this weekend as they take on Hampshire County across two of the south coast’s most respected courses.
A combined Jersey and Guernsey side will compete in both foursomes and singles matches at Barton-on-Sea and Stoneham, with Guernsey’s Dave Jeffery captaining the eight-man team.
Jersey will be represented by Sam Quail, Josh Ozard, Matthew Parkman and Charlie Kiberd, alongside Guernsey quartet Lewis Marley, Tom Le Huray, Rory McKenna and Jack Mitchell.
The fixture provides a rare opportunity for the Islands’ best to test themselves against elite mainland opposition, something Jersey Golf president Juanita Adlington believes is vital for continued development.
“I think it’s huge,” she said. “When you’re playing regularly in Jersey and Guernsey, you’re often facing the same players. This is a chance to go away, play different courses and really test yourselves against quality opposition.
“If anybody watched the final last weekend, that’s the standard of golf we have. It was incredibly high, and this is a chance to showcase that against one of the best county teams.”
That recent Channel Islands final between Quail and Marley only adds further intrigue heading into the weekend.
The pair produced a contest of exceptional quality at La Moye, with Quail eventually prevailing 2&1, but not before Marley fired seven birdies across a remarkable Sunday showing, while the Jersey man responded with six of his own.

“It wasn’t mistakes deciding holes, it was birdies and quality golf,” added Adlington. “That’s exactly the level these players are capable of.”
The test now shifts to the mainland, with Barton-on-Sea, a coastal layout shaped by Harry Colt, offering a traditional links-style challenge, while Stoneham presents a contrasting inland examination of precision and course management.
“It’s a great experience for them,” said Adlington. “Barton is tricky, especially by the coast, and Stoneham is one of the best courses in Hampshire. It’s not a course you overpower, you have to think your way around it.”
While Hampshire will undoubtedly hold home advantage, confidence within the Island camp remains high, particularly given the youthful, in-form nature of the squad.
“I’m incredibly proud of them,” she added. “They’re a young group, but very talented, and they deserve this opportunity.
“Of course results matter, but for me it’s about putting in a performance. If the standard is high and they push themselves, that’s what you want to see. If they play anywhere near the level we saw last weekend, they’ve got a really good chance.”
With momentum building and quality evident across both islands, the stage is set for a compelling weekend of golf on the south coast.
