ST CLEMENT First tightened the Premiership 1 title race with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over leaders Jersey Wanderers First in a match overshadowed by a serious injury to Wanderers goalkeeper Pierce Roche.
The contest began cautiously, with both sides cancelling each other out during a tense opening half hour. However, the game took a distressing turn when Roche suffered a severe knee dislocation while attempting to deal with a shot on goal. With the goalkeeper grounded and in obvious pain, play briefly continued and Wanderers converted into an open net.
Attention quickly shifted away from the scoreline, though, as players from both teams immediately recognised the seriousness of the injury. Following a lengthy stoppage while Roche received treatment, the decision was made for Wanderers to allow St Clement to equalise once play resumed – a sporting gesture that underlined the mood of the occasion.
With right-back Ryan Campos donning the gloves for St Clement, the first half resumed after the prolonged delay and produced a dramatic finish. Seaney McColgan fired St Clement ahead before the break, giving the visitors a narrow advantage at half-time.
St Clement extended their lead early in the second half when Bruno Da Silva found the net to put daylight between the sides. Wanderers responded through Hugo Pereira with 15 minutes remaining, setting up a tense finale, but a disciplined defensive display ensured St Clement held on for a significant win in the battle for Premiership 1 silverware.

Elsewhere in the division, St Peter earned a crucial point in an eight-goal thriller against St Brelade as they continued their fight for survival.
Kieran Lester and Thomas Boarer scored braces for either side, with Leighton Gilroy also on target for St Brelade. Luke Lister and Ryan Hall had put St Peter in front heading into the closing stages, but a late penalty allowed Paul McKay to level and secure a share of the spoils.
Premiership 2 saw plenty of goals, with leaders Rozel Rovers dropping points for only the second time this season in a 2-2 draw with St John First. Harry Mackenzie gave Rozel an early lead before Noah Trench’s superb volley quickly restored parity.
George Sheehy edged Rozel back in front before the interval, but substitute Christian De Oliveira levelled in the second half to stunt Rozel’s title ambitions.
Sporting Academics kept pace in the title race with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Dragoes de Jersey. Kyle Devenish struck twice, while Philip Quinn and Diogo Franca added further goals, with Nuno De Sousa replying for Dragoes.
Sports Club of Jersey climbed to third place after edging St Lawrence First 3-2, although leaders Rozel and Sporting Academics appear set for promotion as the season draws to a close.
In Championship 1, St Clement Reserves avenged their midweek cup final defeat by beating Jersey Wanderers Reserves 1-0 at Les Quennevais, with Taylor Roche scoring the decisive goal.
Grouville Reserves emerged victorious in a ten-goal encounter, defeating St Peter Reserves 6-4. George Westgarth netted a first-half hat-trick, while Tony Pessego, Calvin Antunes and Sol Bennett also found the net.
Championship 2 saw just one fixture, with St Ouen’s C running out 4-1 winners over First Tower United. Harry Baines, Jack Bara, Ethan Young and Charlie Le Mains were all on target for the hosts.
