THE Jersey Bulls first team might be grabbing the headlines this season with their impressive Step Four play-off push, but the future of the club is looking just as promising as the under-16 side continue to impress off island.
The academy group have been travelling regularly to the mainland this season, competing in both the JPL Championship White and the highly competitive JPL Cup.
Facing a demanding schedule and a consistent run of away fixtures, the Bulls’ youngsters have shown resilience and maturity beyond their years.
Under-16 coach Paul Renton believes the strength of the group reflects the steady progress made across the academy as a whole, stating: “We’re blessed at the moment,” Renton said.
“Across the age groups we’ve got some really strong teams and four or five of them are well above average for the size of the island. This under-16 group have been excellent. They’ve been unbeaten in open play for a long time and they’ve put themselves in a really good position.”
The JPL Cup provided a significant test, featuring a number of elite youth programmes including Doncaster FC, Borussia Dortmund London and Salford City. The Bulls proved they could compete at that level, breezing through the group stages with just one defeat in their opening fixture of the season.

Renton believes that exposure to high-level opposition is vital for long-term development, explaining: “Getting that regular off-island football makes a proper difference.”
“Every single game has been away from home. You’re talking three or four games a month, constant travel, and the players have handled it brilliantly.”
That demanding schedule has contributed to an outstanding 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions, a stretch that leaves the Bulls just one point off the top of the JPL Championship White table.
Their closest rivals, Burgess Hill, have edged the Bulls in two narrow recent encounters, but Renton remains encouraged by the performances rather than the results alone.
“We’ve played Burgess Hill in the cup and drew 3-3,” he said. “On the day we were the better team but didn’t take our chances. We know exactly what we’re up against, and that’s the kind of learning experience that really helps the players.”
The campaign has not been without its challenges. All fixtures have been played away from Jersey, placing logistical and financial pressures on players, parents and staff alike. Renton was keen to highlight the collective effort behind the scenes.
“The parents deserve massive credit,” he added. “We’ve had some support through donations, but the majority of the funding comes from them. At under-16 level it’s a really tough age group, some players can step up to senior football, others are balancing different commitments and the support structure has been unbelievable.”
While Eldon Celtic Juniors brought the Bulls’ JPL Cup journey to an end at the end of January, the defeat does little to overshadow what has been a hugely positive season.
Renton believes the wider picture is far more important, saying: “Every year it gets better,” he said. “The players improve, the opportunities improve, the organisation improves. We’re certainly competing in every competition we enter, and that’s all you can ask for.”
With a strong league position, a proven ability to compete against mainland academies and a growing infrastructure around youth development, the Bulls’ under-16s are offering a clear glimpse of a bright future for the club.
