The JFA Cup continues to showcase the unique charm of knockout football, offering sides the chance to test themselves against unfamiliar opposition and, with the right run, earn a shot at the Island’s heavyweights.
Tuesday night provided a stark illustration of that dynamic as Premiership 1 outfit Grouville emphatically ended the JFA Cup run of Sporting Academics, sweeping aside the Premiership 2 high-flyers with a commanding 6-0 victory.
A hat-trick from captain Harrison Moon was accompanied by singles from Andre Nunes, Jason Da Silva and Calvin Antunes.

The result brought an abrupt end to an impressive campaign for Sporting Academics, who had suffered just one defeat all season prior to the tie – a pre-season loss to Jersey Wanderers – and had otherwise maintained a perfect record in league competition.
Against higher-division opposition, however, the gulf in experience and quality proved decisive as Grouville booked their place in the latter stages of the competition.
The current JFA Cup campaign has already produced a wide range of scorelines, highlighting both the ruthlessness of established sides and the unpredictability that defines knockout football.
St Clement First overwhelmed Trinity Reserves 16-0 in the opening round, while St Paul’s First, Jersey Wanderers First and others have also recorded emphatic victories.
Yet the competition has not been without its jeopardy. Grouville themselves were pushed hard in the previous round, edging past Sports Club of Jersey 2-1, while Madeira were forced to navigate a nine-goal thriller against Trinity First to keep their cup hopes alive.
Those contrasting encounters prove the enduring magic of the JFA Cup where dominance and drama often sit side by side.
Grouville now progress to the semi-finals, where they will meet either Rozel Rovers First or St Peter First, who contest their tie on February 14.
The opposite side of the draw promises heavyweight clashes, with Premiership 1 leaders Jersey Wanderers set to face St Paul’s First on February 7, while Madeira welcome St Clement First on February 3, ensuring the path to the final is packed with quality.
