LOCAL football returned in earnest across the Island this weekend, with league points on the line in multiple divisions despite the weather playing its part elsewhere.

The headline fixture in Premiership 2 between the division’s top two, Rozel Rovers and Sporting Academics, was postponed after Rozel’s pitch was deemed unplayable, delaying a clash that could yet have a decisive say in the title race.

Nonetheless, there was still plenty of action across the rest of the leagues as momentum began to build heading into a busy period.

In Premiership 1, St Peter recorded a much-needed victory, claiming their first league win since late September with a spirited 3-2 comeback at home.

The Crosskeys found themselves two goals down early on as St Ouen’s made a fast start, but the hosts showed resilience and composure to turn the contest on its head.

Peter Vincenti led the revival with a crucial brace, before Jack Guille struck the decisive goal to complete the turnaround. Despite being reduced to ten-men as Thomas Boarer was dismissed for a second yellow card, St Peter secured an important three points.

The result lifts St Peter above St Ouen’s into sixth place and provides a timely boost after a challenging run of results.

At the top end of the table, Jersey Wanderers were made to work hard to preserve their five-point lead ahead of a significant clash with St Clements on Tuesday night.

Wanderers travelled to face bottom-of-the-table Madeira in their first of three matches in six days.

The league leaders were tested throughout, with the hosts taking a surprise lead late in the first half through Diogo Velosa. Madeira carried that advantage deep into the second period, but Wanderers’ quality and depth told in the closing stages.

Casey Nixon levelled the scores after 73 minutes before Archie Corbett converted from the penalty spot to edge the visitors ahead.

Substitute Harry Scott then put the result beyond doubt, scoring twice in the final minutes to seal a hard-fought victory and maintain Wanderers’ commanding position at the summit. Three vital points as they build momentum ahead of a pivotal clash with title rivals St Clement on Tuesday evening.

Championship 1 action saw Jersey Wanderers Reserves produce a dominant display at Les Quennevais, cruising to an 8-0 win over St Peter Reserves.

Kalem Taylor was the standout performer, netting a hat-trick as Wanderers controlled the contest from start to finish. Further goals from Nelson Ferreira, Cameron Eloury, Miguel Freitas, Dominic Roscouet and Zac Traynor underlined a ruthless attacking performance that keeps Wanderers firmly in the promotion picture.

Elsewhere in the division, St Ouen’s Reserves continued their strong campaign with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over St Brelade Reserves.

Stewart Daynes wasted no time in opening the scoring after just two minutes and later added his second on the hour mark. Kacper Smilek also struck twice, while Joel Vieira completed the scoring in a convincing away performance.

St Ouen’s Reserves now sit one point clear of Jersey Wanderers Reserves at the top of Championship 1, with a game in hand, setting up a fascinating battle as the season progresses.

The Cherry Godfrey Women’s Division returned on Sunday morning, with emphatic wins for both Jersey Wanderers Women and Rozel Rovers Women.
