JERSEY men’s volleyball team begin their Hampshire Volleyball League campaign this weekend with a challenging opening round, as preparations continue for the Island Games in 2027.
The Island side, who finished third in their group in the competition last season, face a demanding schedule across the day.
Jersey will open against Roke Polonia, followed by two tough early tests against the early pace setters URBOND then Portsmouth United VC 1 — last season’s South East Volleyball Association (SEVA) regional champions.
The fixtures form an important part of the squad’s long-term build-up to the 2027 Island Games, where volleyball will return after an eight-year absence.
Men’s head coach Daniel Grigoras, who was appointed earlier this year, says the squad are in good spirits following a strong performance in St Malo last month against tough French opposition.
“We performed really well in France, and the key now is to stay composed and trust in the volleyball we’ve been playing,” he said. “This weekend isn’t just about results — it’s about building rhythm, discipline and confidence ahead of the Island Games.”
The squad features a familiar line up, but the new name of Seb Lilley adds some excitement after his finding and subsequent addition to the squad.
With recent performances providing encouragement and earlier travel issues now behind them, the Jersey squad travel with confidence as they look to make a positive start to the new season.
