Game of the Week
Integritas JHC Panthers – 4 (Steve Ritzema, Jamie Bore, Charlie Bore, Dan Wilson)
OV Victoriana – 4 (Merrion Carter x2, Henry Dowling, Johnny Hopwood)
Integritas Jersey Hockey Club Panthers lined up against Old Victorians Victoriana on a chilly Saturday morning hoping to get back to their winning ways.
After exerting some early pressure, it was Victoriana who broke the ice. A quick ball out of defence found Sunny Reid in the D and a deft deflection managed to evade the keeper on the three-minute mark.
After a few exchanges at either end, JHC Panthers opened their account. A penalty corner resulted in a barrage of shots that the defence managed to thwart. The next one, however, was converted when Dan Wilson found captain Steve Ritzema in the D, who hit the backboard to level the score on the half-hour.

Victoriana took the lead back three minutes later when Henry Dowling’s persistence paid off, taking the ball along the byline and forcing it into the goal at the near post from an acute angle.
The second half saw a spritely start by JHC Panthers getting back on parity at 2-2, just three minutes after the resumption. Alex Frost made some good progress on the left-hand side finding Charlie Bore in the D. His snap reverse stick strike sped past the keeper before he had a chance to set himself for the shot.
The score was soon to change again when Victoriana took the initiative and enjoyed some sustained pressure down the right of the pitch. A fierce cross evaded the defence, leaving Johnny Hopwood “home alone” a metre out to knock the ball into the goal after 45 minutes.
Victoriana struck again but the goal was disallowed having been played on the body of the attacker before the shot entered the goal from close quarters.
Not to be outdone by his talented son, Jamie Bore got his name on the score sheet. After receiving the ball from the left of the park, his one touch and snap shot inside the left-hand post rattled the backboard.
At 3-3 the game was rising to a crescendo with both sides hoping to grab all the points on offer. JHC Panthers took the lead again, enjoying some periods of pressure with a string of penalty corners. With the keeper on the floor a melee ensued and a lifted ball was fired at an empty net. Hitting a defender on the line on the thigh and keeping the ball out of the goal, the verdict was a penalty stroke, which Dan Wilson dispatched with composure.
Time was running out so the term “game management” was high on JHC Panther’s minds. With just over two minutes to play, Victoriana launched another speedy attack down the right-hand side. Despite the defender’s best efforts, a cross tight to the byline found Merrion Carter, who tapped the ball into the goal to deliver the killer blow.
Victoriana, with their new youth policy, really put JHC Panthers to the test. However, their mix of mature and young players managed to save the day as well as two points, despite taking the lead on a couple of occasions.
