ORKNEY 2025 was officially declared open by HRH The Princess Royal at the Opening Ceremony which took place at Kirkwall’s Bignold Park.

The sun shone as Her Royal Highness welcomed more than 2,000 athletes from 24 island groups across the globe to Orkney to compete in 12 sports: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, and Triathlon.

This marks the first time Orkney has hosted the Games, which takes place from July 12 – 18, making it a landmark occasion and the largest event the island has ever hosted.

As part of her visit, the Princess met key individuals involved in the Games, such as Kevin Gauld who created the water sculpture which played a central part of the Opening Ceremony.

She also met Orcadian, Jodie Brown, who designed the medals which will be presented to athletes. Jodie took inspiration from Orkney’s breathtaking scenery for her design and presented a medal to Her Royal Highness.

Local bands and school pupils entertained the 3,000-strong crowd at the Opening Ceremony which was hosted by television star, Lorraine Kelly.

Athletes from the 24 islands took part in a parade and one athlete from each team was then invited to take part in the Water Ceremony during which waters from each participating island are blended together in a powerful symbol of unity and shared heritage.

At the heart of this ceremony was Kevin’s sculpture, which served as a striking centerpiece. The sculpture will now be moved to the Pickaquoy Centre, where it will stand as a lasting tribute to the Island Games and Orkney’s proud role as host.
