THE Jersey Kart and Motor Club are an absolute gem in Jersey motorsport’s crown, keen to expand their reach locally and get more people
involved.

As a huge motorsport enthusiast, I popped down to the Sorel Loop Road last week to experience the adrenaline-pumping sport myself, and it was unbelievably fun!
“Karting is a fantastic way for people to introduce themselves to motorsport, as many gain the fundamentals here to branch out,” said race secretary Maria Reddy.
“We started when our son got into it, and since then the family haven’t looked back, we just love it.

Although the Island is only nine by five, so much in our sporting landscape seems to fly under the radar, and Jersey’s karting scene is no exception. You’d think that wouldn’t be the case, with Formula One’s exponential growth pushing motorsport further into the limelight, boasting a whopping international fanbase of over 750 million people.

However, Jersey’s Kart Club are committed to growing the sport, using funds from the Sir James Knott Trust to purchase several junior training karts and set up the ‘Kids in Karts’ (KIKS) programme, for those aged from six, all the way to 16.

Even though the club advertise for those ages on the website, membership secretary and KIKS Instructor Michael Reddy said that “all are welcome”, so please don’t hesitate to reach out. Bear in mind, to give karting a go, you must contact the club in advance, as they don’t provide an ‘arrive and drive’ service.

To enrol, you must purchase Motorsport UK’s Karting Starter Pack (ARKS), containing everything you need to make a start on your karting journey. Speaking on the scheme, Jersey Kart Club’s Vice President Mike Foey said: “We want karting to be competitive, but fun, and we want to give folks a taste of what being involved in motorsport is like.
“From small acorns, grows great trees. Today they get into karting, tomorrow a rally driver or a mechanic, who knows! Life’s for living and trying new things, with this being a great experience.”

Through my own experience, in parts very similar to that offered by the scheme, I couldn’t recommend it enough. With all my gear and the kart prepared during an appointment earlier in the week, I was ready to go! Now, of course there were some nerves, given that my driving experience was limited to theory tests and the F1 video game, in which let’s just say I had experienced mixed results (definitely no crashes).

But, when I got up there, all members of the club were so friendly and accommodating, these worries seemed to wash away. Foey was full of praise about Jersey’s karting community: “Many people might think that this is something full of toffs or petrol heads, but it really isn’t like that. We’re from all walks of life, with a shared passion for karting, and we’re a very diverse group, making us stronger and more connected.
“It’s a great community, where we all pull together to make karting a reality.”

My driving days didn’t get off to the most graceful of starts, with the first lap leaving some track barriers reeling. After becoming a bit too confident from doing well on the Sorel Loop Road’s unique track, I messed up with the brakes, which saw me crash on the final downward-sloped corner.

Such an opening lap exhibited the sport isn’t as simple as it seems and goes to show the importance of having the correct gear, as I was able to jump up, dust myself off and carry on. All that hurt was my pride (just a little), but with very minimal damage on the kart, we were all prepared for a second go around the track.

The only way was up from there, and I gradually improved throughout the day, with a couple spin-outs here and there to keep me in check. Michael Reddy was incredibly helpful in my efforts, constantly sparing his time to give me advice. His pointers were incredibly simple to understand, even for a karting beginner like myself, which was a great help.

Through watching the other categories battle it out, with some unbelievable driving, one thing became abundantly clear. Jersey holds some great racing talent, as these racers can really handle a kart, especially on the tight final corner, with shout-outs to Senior leader Luca Benest, and Gearbox KZUK ace Kimberly Reddy.

It had to be one of the most thrilling experiences in my sporting life. Because you’re so low to the surface, you really feel the speed, which gets the adrenaline pumping. I was having so much fun, I didn’t want the day to end.

People may think karting isn’t proper exercise, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Controlling a kart, steering at great speeds, demands significant effort from your core muscles to maintain control, as well as increased heart rates and adrenaline improving cardiovascular health.

Beyond the sport’s physical benefits, karting enhances concentration, improves reflexes, builds confidence and reduces stress, allowing competitors to tackle everyday challenges more effectively.

Apart from the thrilling competitive side, karting offers the opportunity for young people to get into the mechanical side and improve their understanding, with Maria Reddy adding: “Through karting, my twins Kimberly and Nick are now asked to help fix people’s cars, as they’ve developed mechanical skills.”

Getting more people into the sport locally would have great effects, with Foey saying: “More people makes everyone’s life easier, and the club flourishes.
“From track setup and maintenance, to the website, instructing newcomers and bringing ideas for the club to grow, everyone brings their own skills to collectively contribute for all things karting.”
