It's all action in the Jersey Bulls FC camp at the moment, as an ongoing investigation into promotion rivals Redhill and the resulting appeal by the Bulls issued today into their points deduction punishment leaves the league title and the playoff fixtures up in the air Picture: DAVID FERGUSON. OK, I think it’s time a few things were cleared up.

Considering the rumours flying through the Island at present, it’s clear the current situation involving the Jersey Bulls is proving one of the world’s worst-kept secrets.

So, what exactly is going on? Let’s go back and remind ourselves of exactly what this situation entails.

Background

The Jersey Bulls were sat top of the Combined Counties Premier Division South heading into their last game of the season, last Saturday’s home clash against Sandhurst Town.

At the time, they required a win to be crowned champions and secure the one automatic promotion spot, which they duly completed thanks to a 1-0 win courtesy of a Joe Kilshaw strike.

However, announced the previous evening, on Friday 18 April at 8.46pm via email, the Combined Counties League released the decision that the Bulls were being deducted three points due to breaching the rules of fielding an illegible player.

This meant that, despite the victory on the final day, the Bulls slipped from top spot into third place, with AFC Whyteleafe in second place and Redhill securing the title, thanks to a 93rd minute winner in their clash over Guildford City.

The offence was committed when a Jersey Bulls player was mistakenly thought to have reached ten yellow cards in the league, which should have required him to serve a two-match suspension.

He was then sat out for the next two games, home games against Horley Town and Camberley Town, as the Bulls assumed he was required to serve a two-match suspension.
However, one of the yellow cards in question had in fact been issued during an Isuzu FA Vase match, which did not count towards his league tally.

At the time of asking, the player in question only sat on nine league cautions and did not require the suspension.

After the two games out, he was returned to the team, thinking he had served his punishment and, in that returning game against Fleet Town on 22 March, he picked up his tenth league yellow card.

It is from then that the player should have served his two-game suspension. However, due to an error from the Bulls administration team, this was not correctly picked up on and the player continued to play illegally.

Once the error was noticed, the Bulls immediately put their hands up for their mistake and notified the Jersey FA, who then made the decision to continue the referral to the Kent FA and, subsequently, the Combined Counties League.

The league then notified the club of its points deduction decision on the Friday evening.
Jersey Bulls FC were given seven days to appeal the decision of the league to deduct points.

After careful deliberation, Jersey Bulls FC announced via a post on ‘X’ that at 16:25pm today, they have officially filed an appeal against their points deduction decision.

What could happen now?

Well, this is where the story begins to get slightly more complicated.

With the Bulls technically finishing in third position and Whyteleafe in second, the Bulls were originally scheduled to face fourth-placed Cobham in the first play-off match tomorrow at Springfield, with Whyteleafe set to welcome fifth-placed Fleet Town in the other.

However, due to recent events, the league have confirmed with the Football Association that both play-off matches this weekend are to be postponed.

The judicial process impacting the play-off positions has not been completed and, until it has, these matches will be on hold.

As confirmed by several sources on social media, an investigation is currently ongoing with Redhill over allegations that they too fielded an illegible player, but did not reveal the information, as the Bulls did, and therefore received no punishment.

The Redhill player in question, Sean Swift, received five yellow cards between 8 October and 7 December 2024 and should have received a one-game suspension. However, he played on 21 December in their 4-0 home win against Balham.

If true, and Redhill are found guilty and receive the same punishment as the Bulls, the logistics of the play-off matches will be drastically altered.

A three-point deduction for Redhill would leave AFC Whyteleafe as league champions, while the Bulls would jump to second place, leaving Redhill in third.

This would lead to the Bulls facing Fleet Town in the first round of the play-offs while Redhill face Cobham.

If the Bulls were to beat Fleet, they would also receive a home play-off final for finishing in second place in the league.

Also being rumoured is another incident from within this same league, where Guildford City were guilty of the same crime of fielding an illegible player, yet only received a fine by the league.

If proved correct by the ongoing investigation, the Bulls can correctly feel pretty aggrieved at the punishment they have received, considering other clubs have gotten away with the same crimes and not self-declared as the Bulls did.

Considering the Bulls’ decision to appeal the points deduction decision today, there is certainly more of this story set to come out soon.

Stay tuned, there’s a lot more information to follow in this enthralling episode.
