Testing time in prospect as Saints cross swords

Springfield Stadium is the venue for the Charity Cup final against St Peter – a repeat of the final four years ago.

The annual pre-season knock-out competition has been reasonably successful for both clubs in the past 13 years, St Paul’s being victorious on seven occasions and St Peter on three.

St Paul’s manager Stuart André, who misses the match due to being on holiday, said: ‘We’re delighted to be in the final again. We use the Charity Cup as our pre-season for the league and we’ve had some competitive games this time.

‘We’ve done well and defeated Wanderers in both the Charity and Wheway cups, so they were very good results.

‘We had players missing in both games and hopefully everyone will be back for the start of our league season [on Saturday week].’

Wide-man Michael Weir returns this evening after missing the 3-0 Charity semi-final win against Wanderers, while Zeljko Martinovic is also available after being work-tied for the same game, though he faces a fitness test.

André added: ‘St Peter improved their squad last season, they have a lot of very good players and good youngsters coming through as well.

‘They’re going to be a real force this season, so we’re expecting a difficult game tonight.’

St Peter coach Jon Welsh said: ‘Sol Solomon and Tom Ewing are missing because of suspension (red card and two yellows, respectively, from a previous round), but we are still in good shape and looking forward to what we know will be another challenging game.

‘Last season we had a lot of new players in and it took time to get cohesion and team spirit but that’s there from the start this time.

‘We played St Paul’s a lot last season and we managed to get two draws in the league and hopefully the players can give that little bit extra tonight to see us over the line and win a trophy for the club.’

Kick off is at 7.45 pm.
