Swimming: National title for Shalamon

Competing at the ASA National Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, the 17-year-old smashed his lifetime best, previously 28.15 sec, by over a second in the heats, to go into the final in first place with a time of 27.12.

Despite it being his first appearance at the prestigious meet, Shalamon held his nerve, produced another staggering performance and claimed the gold medal in a time of 26.89 sec – just shy of Tom Gallichan’s Island record.

Tigers coach Nathan Jégou was full of praise for the young Jerseyman.

‘It really was a great swim from Harry,’ he said.

‘He has had a superb year so far and he still has the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa to look forward to later this summer.

‘He’ll hope to continue his good form into that event so there’s no time to rest as he’ll be back to training in Jersey from Saturday.’

Tigers still have Holly Hughes and Garth Jackson to race at the National Championships.
