Sport: Hill climb abandoned after Goodyear crash

The English driver, who was the last of the 12 drivers competing in round 19 of the MSA British Championship on the twisting course in Trinity, hit a tree on the Sleman’s curve and required medical attention by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to the General Hospital with serious leg injuries.

The crash happened around 4.15 pm, and due to the time lost attending to the driver – and the clear up operation that followed – the clerk of the course abandoned the remainder of the racing at the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club organised event, supported by Valla Limited, as the road was due to open again at 6.30 pm.

JMC&LCC press officer Richard Buchanan said: ‘There will be a full investigation by the MSA into the crash; it is not for me to comment and everyone at the club sends on their best wishes to Jos for a speedy recovery.

‘It was a great shame because racing was fast and Jersey’s Jason Mourant and Guernsey’s Darren Warwick both qualified for the two rounds of the British Championship run offs, so that was a good result for the Channel Islands.’

Visitor Trevor Willis, champion in 2012, won the only round to take place, round 19, after completing the course in 38.09 seconds in his 3.6 litre OMS racing car.

Guernsey’s Warwick placed sixth in 38.79 and Jersey’s Mourant eighth in a personal best time of 39.44.

Alex Summers' up to 2-litre class record was broken by Jos Goodyear

Mourant said: ‘Unfortunately the day was marred by the crash and I’d like to wish Jos a speedy recovery; I know him well having raced a lot with him on the British Championship circuit this year.

‘It’s the first time I’ve driven Bouley Bay this year so I’m very happy to have got a personal best time.’

Goodyear, on his first official run, broke the course record in the up to two-litre class, a record held by Mourant in 2011 before it was taken off him by visitor Alex Summers two years ago.

Goodyear’s time yesterday of 37.79 seconds was 0.35 quicker than Summers’ 2013 time.

Other records to fall included Mark Spencer driving his Porsche 996t in the Road Going Series Production Unlimited class to 47.58sec. Local driver Kevin Rault drove his well-prepared Ford Anglia to reset his own record in the Sports Libre Saloon Unlimited class when he stopped the clock at 47.58sec. Oliver Du Feu also had an impressive run in the Post Historic Bikes upto 500cc class when he smashed the class record by over 6seconds stopping the clock at 52.30sec.
