De Sousa denied

Yesterday, he scored 25 shots to the 12 carded by top South African Arthur Langley, but was pipped on a measure on a tiebreak, as Langley came through, outrageously, 7-6, 2-17, 3-2.

Today, facing tall Zimbabwean Roy Garden, who won the Commonwealth Games men’s singles title in 1998, de Sousa lost the first set by three shots, but got his game together to win the second at a canter, 14-2, and went into the tiebreak with the momentum behind him.

But it was Garden, a colourful character, who came up trumps, denying the Jersey star, 4-0, on the tiebreaker – which was also a bit of a heartbreaker.
