Running in his main event, the 400 metre hurdles, at the South of England Championships, Irving not only set a lifetime best of 52.57 seconds, he also claimed his first senior medal at the annual event – a hugely impressive silver.

Irving, whose name is synonymous with the NatWest Island Games, having won every colour of medal and captained the Jersey athletics team over the past seven games, is hoping his form takes him right through to his ultimate goal – his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow next year.

His performance at the weekend puts him tantalisingly close to making the Jersey team – he’s now just seven hundredths of a second shy of the qualifying mark.
