The fresh south-easterly breeze and accompanying moderate seas promised lively racing for the 25 boats on an otherwise fine day for the early afternoon start. With the trapezoidal Olympic course set, the race committee sent the sportsboat and fast cruiser classes off simultaneously. Allen Brown and partners’ Melges 24, The Dog’s, took line honours in race one with Alex Ohlsson and Neil Maclachlan’s J109, Jai Ho winning the fast cruiser class from Werner Toporis’ J105, Jubilee G.
