WELL, it gives me precious little pleasure to say it but, given the contents of that bullying little missive sent last week by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to the chief ministers of the three Crown Dependencies, surely no one can now say that our mention in despatches on the G20 ‘White List’ – as distinct from the grey and black ones – will ensure financial peace in our time.

Energy: A barrage is the answer, not underwater turbines
From Brian Le Fondré. IN response to Terry Thuillier’s letter (JEP, 31 January), I would like comment on some of the points he makes. He states that the Rance barrage scheme is very successful. I would agree with that. The proposed Severn barrage, with an output of up to 8GW of electricity and costing around […]
Housing trusts will have to disclose detailed accounts
HOUSING trusts will have to disclose detailed accounts in future as part of a new regulatory regime to be brought into force.
Once again, we have been betrayed
From Ray McCredie. ONCE again the residents of St Helier have been betrayed. The proposal to build houses around the perimeter of the area promised for a Town Park is an outrage. Greedy developers and Hopkins, the UK architects, will be the only ones to benefit, and why is the main architect from the UK? […]
‘Gas guzzlers’ are target of tax plan
MOTORISTS driving large ‘gas guzzlers’ could be forced to pay hundreds of pounds a year under new pollution taxes.
A sneaky reverse into road tax
From Chris Whitworth. ALTHOUGH I’m not and never will be a fan of the many oversized gas guzzlers driving around our small Island, I cannot agree with Housing Minister Terry Le Main’s proposal to introduce an annual charge on all cars based on engine size. This is a very sneaky way of reintroducing road tax, […]
Fuel duty hits green target
From David Rotherham. SENATOR Terry Le Main’s suggestion that something like a cross between the old annual road tax and the discredited and unlamented vehicle emissions duty be introduced is as woolly as he himself admits, and not very well knitted either. The replacement of the road tax with additional fuel duty is as perfectly […]
Quallies clash
JERSEY’S housing qualifications should not be reduced, according to newly appointed Assistant Housing Minister Sean Power. He says that the market is overinflated and that locals are struggling to get on to the property ladder. This view appears to put him in conflict with his minister, Senator Terry Le Main, who has been in favour […]
Proposal is excellent idea
From Ray McCredie. THE proposal by Deputy Geoff Southern regarding the immediate development of the Town Park is excellent. It could be paid for by the Stimulus Package fund. It would create employment and enhance a run down area of town, albeit, ten years in the waiting. Bear in mind that millions of pounds have […]
Taking pennies from pensioners
From Barry Breuilly. WHAT sort of Island are we living in? Those clowns, who call themselves politicians, are profligate with our money which runs into many millions of pounds, yet they want to claw back relevant pennies from our deserving pensioners by banning them from peak-time travel on the buses. How can Transport Minister Mike […]
