TRIBUTES have been paid to the award-winning composer whose work included the “instantly recognisable” theme music for the original Bergerac following his death at the age of 76.
CMG Management said that George Fenton had passed away unexpectedly on Monday.
Mr Fenton built up an extensive body of work across theatre, film and television, including time spent on scores for David Attenborough documentaries.
He was made a CBE for services to music in 2023.
Mr Fenton was behind the theme music for the original Bergerac detective drama created by Robert Banks Stewart, that starred John Nettles and ran on the BBC between 1981 and 1991.
Westward Studios executive producer Brian Constantine, who was a driving force in bringing forward a contemporary version of the show, said that Mr Fenton “gave Jersey something truly special”.
“His music for the original Bergerac became inseparable from the series itself, but it also became part of the identity of Jersey,” Mr Constantine continued.
“That instantly recognisable theme with its wonderful accordion and unmistakable seagull cry, became an earworm for generations and, in many ways, a musical postcard for the Island.”
Mr Constantine noted that the score went on to win a BAFTA, but added that: “Its greatest achievement was perhaps something less tangible: George created a piece of music that people heard and immediately thought of Jersey.
“For those of us who have had the privilege of bringing Bergerac back to the Island, his contribution is something we feel very deeply. The music helped give the original series its character, its sense of place and its enduring connection with Jersey.”
Mr Constantine added that Mr Fenton would be remembered “with enormous affection and admiration” and that “his music will always be part of Bergerac, and in turn, part of Jersey”.
Mr Fenton is survived by his wife, Amanda, ex-wife, Jane, children Gemma, Grace and Bridget, and grandchildren Lola, Audrey, Alfred, George, Frank and Beatrice.
