A STOCKPORT woman has been jailed after Customs officers uncovered a near quarter-of-a-million synthetic cannabis haul in the spare tyre of her car.
Kirsten Abernethy (40) arrived in the Island driving a UK-registered Kia on 26 April on the premise of attending the Jersey Food Festival.
However, upon searching the vehicle, Customs officers noticed the spare tyre was heavier than it should be.
The tyre was found to have 100 packages of brown resin wrapped in yellow film and emblazened with an image of a camel. It was later determined that the tyre contained 9.6 kilos of a synthetic cannabis referred to as ADB-BUTINACA – a class B drug.
It was estimated that the drugs had a maximum street value of £240,000.
Abernethy was sentenced to three years imprisonment in the Royal Court today.
Jersey Customs and Immigration Service senior manager Luke Goddard said: “The professionalism of our border teams continues to disrupt the importation of commercial quantities of controlled drugs. The synthetic cannabis seized is reported as being significantly more harmful and dangerous than natural cannabis and therefore it is particularly pleasing that we have managed to prevent this drug from reaching the streets of Jersey.”
