WORK is due to begin today on a new basketball court at Millennium Park in memory of a much-loved figure in Jersey basketball.
The Guillaume Memorial Court – which will be known as The G Court – is being created in honour of Guillaume Hoareau, who died in 2024 after collapsing during an inter-insular game between Jersey and Guernsey.
Mr Hoareau was a keen sportsman and much-loved player, coach and community figure whose skill, kindness and passion for basketball had a lasting impact on people across the Island.
The existing ball court will be transformed into a vibrant, high-quality public space where Islanders can play, connect and be active.
The project is being delivered through a partnership between the Government of Jersey and the Jersey Basketball Association.
Following Mr Hoareau’s death, the association established a legacy fund in the hope of creating something lasting in his name.
Donations from Jersey businesses and the Island’s basketball community helped the fund greatly exceed its original target, while the government provided match-funding to make the court redevelopment possible.
Local architectural firm ANY provided the design for the court.
Jersey Basketball Association president Paul Milbank said: “The G Court is a lasting tribute to Guillaume and everything he gave to basketball and to Jersey.
“This project shows what can happen when community spirit and government support come together around a shared purpose.”
Ben Bliss, operations manager for the government’s Parks and Gardens team, said: “Working in partnership with the Jersey Basketball Association and local supporters, this project ensures a fitting and lasting tribute to Guillaume Hoareau, while maintaining the site’s role as an inclusive and versatile space for current and future generations.”
The court is expected to be ready by the end of September.
