A MAN who called his sister a “fat pig” and threatened to “publicly hang” her on Facebook amid what he described as “very complicated” tensions over the care of their late mother has avoided jail after promising to seek help for his emotional problems.

Jake Richard Langlois (37) was sentenced for a telecommunications offence, malicious damage and disorderly conduct when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The court heard that Langlois telephoned his sister in February despite being subject to a bail condition prohibiting him from contacting her.

During the recorded call, he called her a string of expletives as well as a “fat pig”, before, in April, he published a Facebook post demanding that his sister give him the keys to a flat he claimed to own and accusing her of failing to care for their mother.

The post added: “I will publicly hang you on here.”

The malicious-damage and disorderly-conduct charges arose from an incident in June when Langlois attempted to force entry to a property.

Representing himself, Langlois said the dispute with his sister was “very complicated” and followed their mother’s death.

He told the court: “It has been a nightmare. I haven’t dealt with all of this well.”

Langlois said he had sought support from mental-health and drug-and-alcohol services and was ready to address his behaviour.

He added: “I understand I need to control my emotions. What I said was foul and wrong.”

Relief Magistrate David Cadin told Langlois: “I’m going to take the opportunity to give you some help.”

He placed him on probation for 12 months and imposed a two-year restraining order.
