A MOTHER is planning to make her 18-year-old son’s dream come true by transporting him to his school prom in a “rainbow” convoy of his most cherished vehicles.

St Clement resident Samantha Jones has dreamt up the ultimate end-of-school celebration for her son Zac, who has been a student at Mont à L’Abbé for almost 12 years.

Her plan is for a line of “colourful VW campervans” to drop Zac – who has autism and other learning difficulties – off at the Radisson Blu hotel for the school prom tomorrow evening.

Ms Jones said she didn’t “exactly” know how her son developed such a strong affinity for the VW camper.

“Zac was pretty much non-verbal until he was at least seven or eight years old, but the second word he ever spoke was ‘bus’,” she said. “Every time he saw a Volkswagen campervan he would say ‘bus’, so it has been an absolute love of his since before he could talk.”

With her son’s graduation from school just round the corner, Ms Jones said she was intent on making his prom experience one to remember forever.

“I’ve had two other children that have had proms, and we’ve always managed to find a nice car to take them to prom in”, she said. “For Zac, I thought I’ve got to do something special for his prom too, and there was no hesitation, it’s got to be in the campervan.”

Asking people to lend their vehicles to the convoy has not come naturally to Samantha, but she is sure that the end product will eclipse her discomfort.

“Time is the most precious thing you can give away and I’m asking for people to take time out of their day and do this,” she said. “I feel really uncomfortable doing it, but I know that it’s just going to make Zac so happy, and he’s the most amazing son I could wish for.

“He’s so wonderful, and he’s got such a lovely spirit and such a kind heart, and it’s so nice to be able to do something extra special for this.”

So far she says that two people have “definitely agreed” to lend their VW campervans to the convoy, but she has her fingers crossed for even more.

“We’re going to leave him to choose which one that he rides in, but it would be so amazing to have as many turn up in all colours of the rainbow”, she said.

“We’re living in a crazy world right now, so it would be so nice for everyone to see a convoy of colourful buses on the way to the Radisson.

“It would put a lot of smiles on children’s faces for sure, and I just can’t wait to see Zac’s – he’ll be gobsmacked.”
