PORTS of Jersey is seeking a seasonal harbourmaster for Gorey in the wake of renewed calls from boat owners to improve how the “iconic location” is looked after.

The “harbour attendant” position will see the successful applicant sworn in as an acting harbourmaster, working on a seasonal basis from May to September, averaging around eight hours per week.

Welcoming visiting mariners and supporting local boat users are among the duties involved.

The job description stated: “It’s a flexible role suited to someone who enjoys being outdoors, values good conversation, and likes being an active part of their local community, without the commitment of full‑time hours.”

It noted that, while marine or boating experience “would be a bonus”, it was “not essential”.

“Someone who takes pride in Gorey, has a friendly and approachable manner, enjoys meeting new people, and feels confident supporting both visitors and locals will feel right at home in this role,” the description continued.

Those interested in applying should email pojhr@ports.je before 10 May.

The announcement comes just days after Gorey Boat Owners Association chair Barry Faudemer said the need for such a position had been raised with harbourmaster Captain Bill Sadler, as part of wider efforts by the GBOA to ensure the “iconic location” is looked after.

Captain Sadler said: “Over the winter there have been lots of discussions with the Boat Owners’ Association.

“One of the ideas was in terms of, how do we encourage more French people to visit Gorey.”

He noted that “at the moment, we don’t collect mooring fees when people come in because there is no-one normally present over those high-water periods when they come in”.

He explained that Ports hoped the job would become self-sustaining “if we can collect a modest amount of mooring fees off people visiting, make the experience better for them by having someone meeting them, greeting them, pointing out where the bus stop is or where the best restaurant is to go – make it a bit more of a marine leisure welcome”.
