A FORMER Senator has launched his bid to return to the States, more than a decade after stepping down.

Alan Breckon was a States Member between 1993 and 2014, when he opted not to seek re-election.

He is a former member of the Legislation Advisory Panel and a former chair of the Jersey Consumer Council.

Outlining why is he is seeking a return to the political arena after 12 years, he said: “I am motivated to stand because I believe that a considerable amount of our money has, and still is, being wasted. So, my main aim if elected would be to seek meaningful savings in States expenditure. Presently many millions of pounds are being spent on computers, consultants and digitalisation – over £60m has been budgeted over the next three years on IT.

“Also ‘revenue transformation’, IT improvement programmes and digital care plans are being proposed for many more millions.

“Who is responsible and accountable for all this? There are more questions than answers.”

He added that removing GST from food “is achievable” with “better and more-focused States spending” to help Islanders with the cost-of-living crisis.

Mr Breckon also said that he would like to see a “thorough review” of ministerial government carried out and questioned whether the Island’s political leadership had improved in the 20 years since it replaced the old committee system.

Mr Breckon is one of 17 Senatorial candidates hoping to secure one of the nine Islandwide seats available.
