A ST Helier Roads Committee member, who campaigned to have the Millennium Town Park built, is bidding for a States Assembly seat once again – but said this will be his final attempt.

Bernie Manning will seek one of the three seats on offer in St Helier South.

He said that he is “proud of the strong community spirit that makes the district so special”, but added that he believed the parish “can achieve much more”.

An active member of the St Helier community, Mr Manning has served on the Roads Committee and the Accounts Committee. In the past, he has also been vice-president of the Jersey Federation of Small Businesses, chairman of the St Helier Retail Group and a committee member of the Jersey Variety Club.

In 1996, he formed the Millennium Town Park group, which gathered 17,500 signatures and eventually saw the park completed in 2011. He has continued to campaign for the extension of the park to St Saviour’s Road.

This will be his sixth, and Mr Manning has said his “final attempt”, to enter the Assembly. He added that he wants to “bring experience, persistence, and genuine community commitment” to St Helier South and that he believes in “listening to parishioners, standing up for local priorities, and making sure promises are turned into action”.

Mr Manning is the third person to declare for St Helier South, behind incumbents Deputies Tom Coles and Beatriz Porée – both of who represent Reform Jersey. The other sitting Deputy, Reform Jersey party leader Sam Mézec, is seeking an Islandwide Senatorial mandate.
