PARISH representatives have urged the Infrastructure Minister to take action regarding the installation of a pedestrian crossing in St Brelade that lies on a stretch of road identified as an accident blackspot.
The minister, Constable Andy Jehan, was asked by Deputy Montfort Tadier about planned road safety improvements during question time in the States Assembly.
Mr Jehan said he hoped to progress the crossing at Rue de la Sergente at the point of the intersection with the Railway Walk, but admitted that the matter had moved at a slow pace.
The intention, he added, was to acquire a small parcel of land that would provide sufficient space for a crossing to be installed, but that he had been unable to secure a meeting with the landowner, in spite of seeking this meeting for the past year.
Another St Brelade politician, Deputy Jonathan Renouf, asked if the matter was a priority for the minister – Mr Jehan said that it was, but said this was “one of many”.
Parish Constable Mike Jackson said the matter had been under consideration without being resolved for “a significant number of years” and called for action.
Mr Jehan pointed out that he was only “days away” from giving up his ministerial role at the start of the election period, however Deputy Tadier said that officers in the Infrastructure and Environment Department should be tasked with progressing the matter and, if necessary, should consider other options for the project, including the possibility of compulsory purchase.
A Freedom of Information response published in March 2025 revealed that in the past ten years there had been 44 road traffic collisionson the stretch of road between Route d’Orange and Le Braye, 13 of which had resulted in injury or death.
