STUDENTS returning to Jersey from universities in Kent are being asked to contact the government’s Immunisation Team “to ensure that all recommended preventative measures are in place” following the meningitis outbreak in the county.
In an update yesterday, Public Health Jersey said that it was continuing to “work closely” with the UK Health Security Agency to monitor the situation.
The UKHSA is investigating the meningitis outbreak in Kent, with the number of cases standing at 29 as of Sunday afternoon.
Public Health Jersey has stated that the risk to the Island “remains very low”.
But it said that, “as a precaution”, students returning to Jersey from universities in Kent – as well as Islanders who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury between 5 and 15 March – were being asked to contact the Immunisation Team.
“This is to ensure that all recommended preventative measures are in place and that you continue to receive the latest advice and guidance,” the statement continued.
“If you fall into either group, please get in touch with the Immunisation Team by telephone 01534 443741 or email to immunisationteam@health.gov.je as soon as possible.”
The government confirmed last week that there were “fewer than ten” students known to the Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department who were registered as currently studying higher education in the affected area.
