SGB Hire Channel Islands – which has been in business for over five decades – is shutting its doors, it has been announced.

Parent company BrandSafway said it would be supporting staff with “appropriate assistance” in the wake of the decision, which was made following “careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders”.

Established in 1968, SGB Hire Channel Islands supplies a range of equipment and services to the construction, landscaping and events sectors.

But in a statement yesterday, BrandSafway said that “a decision has been made to close our SGB Hire Channel Islands operations”.

It continued: “This was not an easy decision and was reached only after careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders.”

“Our immediate priority is to support our employees in this situation by providing appropriate assistance.”

The statement added that customers and business partners were “being informed in a timely and appropriate manner” and that “we would like to thank our employees, customers, and partners for their trust and collaboration over the years”.

The JEP has asked why the decision was made and how many staff in Jersey and Guernsey are impacted.
