A MARINE and fisheries expert has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Jersey National Park.

Greg Morel has more than two decades of experience in environmental governance, marine resource management and government policy delivery.

A former head of marine resources for the government, Mr Morel will be tasked with leading the next phase of the park’s development enhancing conservation and engagement programmes, strengthening partnerships and supporting ongoing work to establish the park’s statutory foundations.

The Jersey National Park covers more than 2,000 hectares and is supported by planning policies designed to recognise and protect the area’s environmental impact and beauty.

It was initially set up following a demonstration organised by The National Trust for Jersey in 2009 in response to growing concern about over-development of the Island, with the concept being endorsed by the States Assembly two years later.

Mr Morel said: “The Jersey National Park represents the most treasured parts of our Island: places that define who we are. I am delighted to join the park to work alongside the board, partners and community to help secure its future.

“I look forward to ensuring the park is more visible, understood and actively enjoyed, while strengthening the protections that will sustain Jersey for generations to come.”

The park features four offshore reefs, a series of headlands across approximately 30 miles of coastline and more than 50 miles of cliff paths.

Chair of the Jersey National Park, Jim Hopley MBE, added: “Greg joins us at a critical time, as the park develops its formal role, scales up delivery across our programmes and strengthens its position as it moves into its second decade. His appointment brings the leadership, environmental experience and Island knowledge required to take the organisation forward. He will play a central role in our next phase, and we welcome the skills and direction he will bring.”
