The Greater World Christian Spiritualist Church building, advertised by Sarre & Co.

PLANS have been submitted to turn a spiritualist church into a family home.

The building – at 13 Dorset Street in St Helier – was built in the 1970s and hosted the Greater World Christian Spiritualist Church of Jersey.

The Jersey branch’s website advertises spiritual healing alongside Holy Communion and visiting the sick. They also published several volumes of “Zodiac messages”, recorded from addresses made by the “Christ-messenger Zodiac” between 1912 and 1957.

The building was sold in August 2024 to Coral Da Silva and Victor Higino Velosa Da Silva for £210,000. The owners said they had advertised it as a community space, but after three months, no-one had expressed an interest in using it as a place of worship.

The plans submitted to the Planning Department show how the building could be turned into a two-bedroom house with a garden and balcony.

Because the application is for a change of use, from a place of worship to a dwelling, the applicants also had to show that they had advertised the building for community purposes. A ballet school and a UK-based church were among those who viewed the site, but no occupant was found.
