A GROUP of eco volunteers collected around six kilograms of rubbish and 26 bags of dog waste in a single beach clean – and are calling for more people to help them during their next session.
Members of Plastic Free Jersey, who describe themselves as “wombles”, began their most recent clean-up at the Bel Royal slipway on Sunday afternoon.
They walked along the beach towards the Gunsite Café, before retracing their steps and continuing in the direction of the Old Station Café.
While recent sand build-up had covered many of their usual litter hotspots, volunteers said they still found significant amounts of debris – much of it made up of microplastics, which are tiny plastic fragments, usually under 5mm, from broken-down larger plastics or intentionally manufactured beads.
Organisers described the session as a “great start to the year”, but noted that it highlighted the ongoing problem of plastic pollution along Jersey’s coastline.
The session one of the many cleans organised by Plastic Free Jersey on the last Saturday of each month.
Islanders are encouraged to join for the next one on Saturday 31 January from 10am at Lay-by Six in St Aubin.
