A SCOUT leader has recently celebrated a huge milestone as she picked up an award commemorating 50 years of voluntary service.

Christine Marett was presented with the Chief Scout’s 50 Years Service Award on New Year’s Eve, having first joined the 2nd Jersey (Grève D’Azette) Scout Group in August 1975.

She was presented the certificate by Glen Militis, the Island lead volunteer for Jersey Scouts.

Explaining her journey with the youth movement, Jersey Scouts said Christine first got involved in the Jersey Scout Band in 1972, following in the footsteps of her husband Mick.

The pair have both been involved with the band ever since, performing in the UK and Europe.

Celebrating her achievement, Christine’s sister, Róisín Pitman, said the award recognises how “hard-working and modest” she is.

Róisín said: “Christine’s 50 plus years of dedication to scouting is rightly being recognised.”

She added that her sister, a former veterinary nurse, is also a dog lover and volunteers with the Pets as Therapy group, regularly taking her pets to local primary schools to support the children.

“I often joke that Christine does more in retirement,” Róisín continued. “She always slaps on a smile and never wants to let the children down.”

After the award presentation, Jersey Scouts said to Mrs Marett: “Thank you Akela (scout leader title) for all you do for Scouting at the 2nd Jersey and Jersey Scouts, it is very much appreciated”.
