MORE than 70 students will feel the thrill of Formula 1 next month as part of a national competition designed to promote STEM learning.

The Stem Racing UK event, formerly known as F1 in schools, will be held at Jersey College for Girls on Wednesday 10 December, with teams of three to six students from local schools competing for a place on the national podium and a spot at the STEM Racing UK National Finals 2026 in Sheffield.

Supported by Formula 1 and run locally by Digital Jersey in association with STEM Racing UK, the competition challenges students to design, build, and race miniature F1 cars while developing skills in project management, marketing, and sponsorship.

Digital Jersey provides schools with free access to manufacturing, analysis, and race equipment, alongside expert advice and mentoring.

Digital Jersey chief executive Tony Moretta said: “Our first year of this programme last year was a real success and I’m pleased that we will have even more secondary school students now taking part under the new STEM Racing umbrella.”

Building on the programme’s success, Digital Jersey has also launched STEM Racing Primary, giving younger pupils aged 9–11 the chance to design and race their own mini F1 cars at a regional event next year.

Mr Moretta added: “We’re also expanding the programme to primary schools for the first time, giving younger students the chance to explore the basics of engineering by designing their own mini F1 cars.

“The initiative, this year sponsored by local technology firm C5 Alliance, offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop vital STEM and business skills in a fun, engaging, and creative environment – and with the chance to represent the Island on a national and even global stage at stake, I’m sure the competition event will be incredibly exciting.”

Tom Milner, Project Director at STEM Racing UK, said: “This year marks the second STEM Racing event in Jersey following the launch of the challenge in the country in 2024, and we are delighted to see the competition going from strength to strength with more teams and schools joining us.”
