JERSEY Airport is set to review whether it should open earlier during periods of operational issues after long queues at security caused several passengers to miss their flights yesterday morning.

Travellers reported queues stretching back to the terminal entrance, with some calling the situation a “shambles” on social media.

Sarah-Louise Stubbs, head of customer experience and terminal operations, explained that one of the security scanners developed a technical fault earlier this week.

“As it couldn’t be repaired by engineers on island, we immediately arranged for a specialist engineer to fly in from the UK,” she said.

“A further part was required, which arrived early this morning, and the scanner is now back in service.”

She explained that Jersey Airport posted updates on social media to advise passengers that security may take longer than usual and deployed additional staff to assist, but added: “We acknowledge this did not fully resolve the situation and we recognise the stress and inconvenience caused.”

Ms Stubbs noted that a “number of factors come into play when airlines decide whether to delay a flight”, including the impact on other passengers and the aircraft’s next flight.

“This is always an airline decision,” she added.

She confirmed that the Airport is set to review its processes, including whether to open earlier than 5.30am during periods of operational issues.

“We sincerely apologise to all those impacted,” added Ms Stubbs.
