A PARISH Rector has offered support to struggling families after a church donation tin was broken into over the weekend.
St Saviour Rector, the Rev Martin Evans said that it is “disappointing” that money donated to go to charity and community projects had been stolen and added that the church’s doors were always open to parishioners in need.
He said: “If I could talk to them I would tell them to come and speak to me for support. I’m just hoping and praying whoever took it really needed it badly, to help feed their kids or something.
“As Rectors, we have access to a fund. It is a few thousand and I am always open to chats to see where I can potentially give financial support to people who need it the most. We are definitely disappointed about this happening.”
He explained that all donations go partially to charity and to funding the ministry and community projects in the parish/
Mr Evans added: “I am proud that the church is used almost everyday for community activities and we are so open for community events. I often see people just having a sit or a think or a pray. It’s a peaceful retreat.
“It’s disappointing but at the end of the day- it’s not the end of the world. We are fixing the box, it is just a shame for those who went out of their way to donate to our community. It really is a beautiful, big church.”
In a social media post over the weekend, the church said that it had noticed an increase in petty debts within the last couple of months, which had prompted them to improve the security of the box by adding a money chute. However, this was damaged in the theft.
There was also cash taken from the candle donation tin, which church officials suspect is occurring regularly due to lack of money in the tin.
