Deputy Philip Ozouf arriving at the States Chamber ahead of the debate on his suspension.

THE political career of one of the Island’s most recognisable States Members is hanging by a thread – with the Assembly to be asked to suspend Deputy Philip Ozouf until after he will be sentenced by the Royal Court for immigration offences.

The former Treasury and External Relations Minister has only just returned to States duty after serving a 28-day suspension for motoring offences.

But the Privileges and Procedures Committee, which upholds the conduct of States Members, has now lodged a further proposition calling for Deputy Ozouf to be suspended until his current criminal case is concluded.

In the proposition, the committee said: “The Privileges and Procedures Committee has a responsibility to protect the reputation of the Assembly and uphold Members’ standards in relation to the Code of Conduct.

The proposition is set to be debated at the next States sitting, which begins on Tuesday 11 November. However, the debate will be held behind closed doors so as to “avoid any public, and potentially, prejudicial” discussion of the case.
