GRAINVILLE School’s courtyard turned into a mini pit lane this week as students got hands-on with rally cars – and quizzed one of their own teachers who will be behind the wheel at the Jersey Rally this weekend.

Assistant headteacher Emma Falle, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the local motorsport scene, brought her car to campus to give students a taste of life in the fast lane.

Mrs Falle explained the engineering and precision behind rally cars to Grainville students, who have the opportunity to study automotive skills through Highlands College.

The geography teacher was joined by other competitors – including navigator Romany Stephens, Grainville alumni John Le Brun, and his co-driver Tim Hamon – who all shared their insight into the world of motorsport.

Mrs Falle said: “I am very grateful to them for giving up their time to bring the cars in and talk to the students.

“Motorsport is at the cutting edge of innovation and often research and development starts in the sport before being part of mainstream automotive production.

“I love the opportunity to share my love of the sport with the students to inspire them to consider a range of career options in the future.”

Since joining Grainville in 2002, Mrs Falle – also a geography teacher – has found creative ways to link her love of rallying with learning. In past rallies, she has even competed wearing race gear designed by her students.

This year’s Jersey Rally, taking place on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 October, will see nine of Mrs Falle’s former students competing – including Sienna Denny Mallon who designed her car’s livery back in 2010.
